During this virtual program, meet Shawanda Corbett, a rising art-world star who will discuss pottery, painting, performance, jazz and the “complete body”. Corbett uses all this, plus film and photography to reframe notions of gender, race and the body. Raised in Mississippi and now based in the UK, the self-described “cyborg artist” draws on influences ranging from Japanese and Western African ceramic traditions and jazz music to cyborg theory and her lived experience as a differently-abled Black woman. Corbett joins NMWA Director of Education and Interpretation Deborah Gaston for a wide-ranging conversation to share her insights into her multidisciplinary creative practice, affinity for music, and desire to foster empathy and inclusivity.
Shawanda Corbett (b. 1989) holds a DPhil in Fine Arts from the Ruskin School of Oxford University and recently received a prestigious Turner Bursary prize (2021). Corbett represented the UK at the Venice Biennale (2023) had a solo exhibition at Tate Modern as part of Art Now (2022) and took part in the exhibition, Body, Vessel Clay (2022) and had her first solo exhibition in the U.S. at Salon 94.
This talk is a collaboration between UK Friends of NMWA and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This is the third in a series of talks sponsored by UK Friends highlighting UK artists to the international community.
